We had heard the mother bird’s warning as we approached her nest, but it was what we saw at our feet that told us that something had gone very wrong last night. We have our suspicions:  a local mountain lion looking for a small snack or a snake hunting for dinner. Perhaps an owl had waited patiently for the hatchings to grow big enough to become a meal, yet still remain too young to put up a fight.                                                                            The birds in the apple tree have already grown and left the nest, but what about the one Bryon found last week?                                                   See for yourself–this one did not budge until I was well away from the nectarine tree.
